Gamelan Sekar Jaya, the most celebrated gamelan ensemble outside of Indonesia, returns to Yerba Buena Gardens Festival with a breathtaking mix of traditional and contemporary music and dance works. Under the direction of internationally renowned gamelan composer and performer Ida Bagus Made Widnyana and legendary dance master I Made Keranca, the 40-member Bay Area company presents a program showcasing three different gamelan ensembles—the intricate and sinuous melodies of gender wayang, a quartet of bronze and bamboo metallophones; the delicate and refined gamelan angklung, an ensemble of small bronze metallophones, drums and flutes; and the intoxicating gamelan jegog, Bali’s energetic bamboo ensemble with marimbas up to 10-feet long. Settle in and catch this music the way it’s meant to be heard – outside on the green!
