Nurtured by the Bay Area’s extraordinary network of jazz mentoring programs, bassist, vocalist, composer and arranger Aneesa Strings has emerged in recent years as one of the most compelling and promising musicians on the scene. Showcased by bass star Christian McBride at last year’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, the Oakland native soaked up knowledge from UC Berkeley’s Young Musicians Program, the Oaktown Jazz Workshop, the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, before earning jazz studies degrees from USC and Michigan State. Delivering a sleek program of original tunes and jazz and R&B standards, she’s performing with a combo that includes drummer Ruth Price, a frequent collaborator similarly versed in an array of styles, and pianist Bryan Simmons.
