Nicaraguan-American percussionist, educator, producer, and bandleader Annette Aguilar is a bona fide product of the Mission District, and she’s got the mural to prove it. Portrayed in the Chata Mural in memory of KPOO radio host Micaela “Chata” Gutierrez at 24th and South Van Ness Streets, Aguilar has been a force on the New York music scene for three decades, but she’s never neglected her ties to the Bay Area. As a bandleader, she’s best known for her Brazilian-Latin combo StringBeans, which has recorded three critically hailed albums. The blazing band has toured internationally, including three stints as U.S. State Department-sponsored Latin Jazz Ambassadors. Currently the timpanist/percussionist for the Association of Dominican Classical Artists, Aguilar is thrilled to bring her ensemble back home.
