After Brooklyn Raga Massive’s epic 2017 YBG Festival performance of Terry Riley’s groundbreaking minimalist masterwork “In C,” a genre-bending collaboration with Classical Revolution, the Brooklyn-based collective returns with a new groundbreaking project. Teaming up with Martha Redbone, the celebrated soul-steeped roots singer of Native American and African-American descent, BRM plunges into a charged cultural mashup combining Appalachian laments and blues hollers with classical Indian modes. Like BRM, Redbone is no stranger to audacious cultural combinations. Her latest album The Garden of Love-Songs of William Blake features her sumptuous voice singing Blake’s immortal words set to country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul and traditional Native American forms. Drawing on members of both ensembles, this unprecedented collaboration turns the Gardens into a fertile field for musical experimentation.
