In Venezuela, a bululú is a gathering that generates excitement, and the new band Bululú certainly fits that description. Led by Venezuelan-born percussion master and vocalist Lali Mejia, the nine-piece combo draws on folkloric styles from Venezuelan, Colombian, Cuban and other Caribbean cultures. With Mexican-born string expert Jose Roberto Hernandez serving as music director, the ensemble delivers infectiously grooving and insistently celebratory performances showcasing a stellar cast of highly seasoned players. Reflecting the vibrant mix that makes up the Bay Area’s Latin American community, Bululú features Salvadoran-American pianist Ruthie Dineen, Venezuelan percussionist/vocalist Omar Ledezma Jr., Mexican-American trumpeter Miguel Govea, Peruvian violinist/vocalist Fernanda Bustamante, Chilean vocalist/percussionist Lichi Fuentes, Venezuelan vocalist Norma Kansau, and Berkeley-American bassist Ayla Davila (a founding member of Mexican roots ensemble Los Cenzontles).
