As the sonic architect of the Mission District’s prodigious, politically-charged Latin music collective Soltron, Daniel Riera often plays amidst a surging tide of percussion and brass. But for this concert the San Francisco native presents a set of new music in a stripped-down setting showcasing his compositional vision and multi-instrumental chops. Performing on flute, vocals, wind controller, and modular synthesizer, he’s designed a singular blend of jazz improvisation laced with hip hop, funk and Latin grooves. Powered by Oakland drummer Darian Gray, who can often be found touring with organ great Booker T. Jones, Riera’s quintet includes keyboardist and Lauryn Hill’s former music director Kev Choice, bassist Mike Shiono, former music director for Jennifer Holliday, and rising guitarist Andrew Levin.
