No string ensemble blazes more brightly on the Bay Area music scene than Del Sol Quartet, a group eager to bring music into any setting, from Mission District storefronts and East Bay parks to august concert halls and the hallowed grounds of Angel Island Immigration Station. Led by violist Charlton Lee with cellist Kathryn Bates and violinists Hyeyung Sol Yoon and Benjamin Kreith, Del Sol specializes in new music. Over the past three decades the group has commissioned or premiered hundreds of works by a vast constellation of leading composers including Terry Riley, Gabriela Lena Frank, Tania León, Frederic Rzewski, Vijay Iyer, Mason Bates, Pamela Z, Erberk Eryilmaz, Theresa Wong and Huang Ruo (whose oratorio “Angel Island” is the centerpiece of the quartet’s ongoing relationship with the West Coast’s primary immigrant processing center from 1910-1940). Wherever Del Sol goes and whatever they perform, Del Sol illuminates a vast universe of creative possibilities, combining rigorous intelligence with a commitment to voluptuous beauty.
