One of the most exciting and dynamic ensembles on the Bay Area’s thriving but underground big band scene is the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, a swaggering 17-piece combo based at Doc’s Lab in North Beach. Bristling with talent, the ESO focuses on original compositions and arrangements by band members, including trumpeters Henry Hung and Darren Johnston, trombonists Rob Ewing and Danny Lubin-Laden, and saxophonists Sheldon Brown, Kasey Knudsen and Mike Zilber. Leading the ensemble is the quietly brilliant Berkeley-reared trumpeter Erik Jekabson, who gained invaluable experience in New York and New Orleans before returning to the East Bay.
