Oakland-based hip-hop orchestra Ensemble Mik Nawooj premieres its new immersive hip-hop oratorio, Death Become Life. Portraying a story about loss and transformation through the lens of composer/pianist JooWan Kim’s magnetic score, MCs Do D.A.T. and Sandman’s riveting rhymes backed by a chamber orchestra, graffiti-inspired artwork by Ernest Doty and interpretative dance by TURFinc., this is EMN’s most ambitious production yet. Included in the program are deconstructions of classic Hip-Hop tracks from the 1990s, representing both East and West coast, as commissioned by YBCA, and by ESPN for Super Bowl 50.
