The Bay Area has a long and deep history of extraordinary women playing jazz, funk, rock and soul, and the Jazz Herstory Collective is a project that celebrates that legacy. Featuring some of the most prodigious young musicians on the Bay Area scene, the JHC has honed an infectiously grooving repertoire of jazz classics, original soul jazz and contemporary styles. The project brings together a soaring triumvirate of soul-steeped singers with MoonCandy’s Valerie Troutt, the award-winning Viveca Hawkins, and Kimiko Joy (who performs at Yerba Buena Gardens earlier in the summer singing reggae with RUBaDUB Posse). The rhythm section is just as formidable, featuring drummer Ruth Price, bassist/vocalist Aneesa Strings and pianist Sundra Manning, best known for her extensive work with soul star Ledisi.
