The great Bay Area band Kugelplex is steeped in the secular, celebratory music of Eastern European Jewry, preserving and building on a tradition that was almost wiped out by the Holocaust. Always looking to collaborate—they’ve worked widely with powerhouse soul/funk/jazz singer Linda Tillery—the group teams up with Syrian-born percussion master Faisal Zedan his Arabic drum ensemble Ajyal. Featuring clarinetist Jason Ditzian, accordionist/pianist Dan Cantrell, violinist/vocalist Lila Sklar, percussionist Michael Pinkham, guitarist Max Baloian, and bassist Eric Perney, Kugelplex has performed with Zedan over the years, but the ecstatic experience of joining forces at a Tunisian wedding last year left all the players determined to chase the buzz again. There are no nuptials planned, but the concert promises the joyous celebration of a wild vibe of Arabic-Jewish wedding.
