A program honoring influential but oft-overlooked African-American women composers and musicians hailing from early 20th century Louisiana, Daughters of the Delta is the latest cultural extravaganza spearheaded by Bay Area vocalist and culture-keeper, and YBG Festival Seed Commission artist, Michelle Jacques. A New Orleans native, she brings her signature Crescent City style to songs by Blu Lou Barker, Lil Hardin Armstrong, Lizzie Miles and other Black women innovators rarely mentioned as foundational figures in American music. Exploring spirituals, gospel, jazz and the blues via vintage material and original compositions, Chelle and friends bring together a phenomenal cast of musicians, including powerhouse vocalists Rhonda Crane, and Tammi Brown and Bryan Dyer, both founding members of Bobby McFerrin’s latest ensemble, Motion.
