From time immemorial humans have raised their voices together in song, an act that transforms disparate groups into purposeful organisms. Directed by Reuben Zellman and accompanied by Sid Quinsaat, the Community Music Center’s New Voices Bay Area TIGQ Chorus is a mixed-voice choral ensemble for singers who self-identify as transgender, intersex or gender-queer. Since debuting at the 2018 SF Trans Day of Remembrance, New Voices has become an essential vehicle for building a creative, empowered, joyful space where voices that have been silenced or shamed can resound and change the way the world thinks about gender identity and music. The group performs an array of musical styles united by the imperative of empowerment, transformation and communal celebration. Featured on NPR and in the San Francisco Chronicle, the chorus continues to welcome new singers without audition.
