Reflecting the experimental nature of the Bay Area music scene, Nomad Session is an unprecedented ensemble that brings together a dazzlingly diverse array of instruments. The octet includes members of every woodwind and brass family, with flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba. It’s the first time this instrumentation has been employed in an ongoing ensemble rather than a one-time project, and Nomad has turned into a magnet for composers eager to explore its singular orchestral possibilities. Commissioning new pieces and arrangements, the group is radically expanding the wind repertoire with wildly imaginative classical pieces like Holst’s Planets Suite and popular music, such as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
