San Francisco’s Camille Mai is an artist who keeps every door open. A pianist, vocalist, composer and leader of the uncategorizable band Rebirth Canal, she’s created a protean body of songs infused with Latin American rhythms filtered through an abiding affection for the slinky grooves of the late, pervasively influential producer J Dilla. That supremely flexible rhythmic foundation supports a gorgeous mélange of sounds, encompassing traditional Vietnamese modes, French chanson, jazz improvisation and harmonies, and far beyond. Her stellar Rebirth bandmates include Soltron musical director Daniel Riera on EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) and modular synth, Rhoyalbaib’e Foston on drums, Ami Molinelli on percussion, Yadier Noa Chamble on bass, and Greg Jacobs on piano. Still buzzing from a triumphant performance at the Havana Jazz Festival, Rebirth Canal delivers music so fresh it sounds like tomorrow.
