Oakland-based MC, award-winning spoken word poet, activist, and educator Karega Bailey is the guiding spirit behind SoL DeVeloPMeNT, a charismatic crew that delivers trenchant, politically resonant verse amidst an inexorable flow of jazz, soul and hip-hop grooves. The director of special education at Oakland’s Roses in Concrete Community School, Bailey is the subject of the documentary “Surrender: A Story of Rhythm Restoring Hope,” which followed his album “Surrender” and his book “Surrender: A Poetic Ethnography.” In Sol Development, he’s rallied a potent contingent of music educators to create an uplifting soundtrack to the movement for justice, freedom and hope. Sacramento’s four-piece soul combo Mino Yanci provides the grooves for SoL DeVeloPMeNT.
