Cuban saxophonist, percussionist and composer Yosvany Terry is in the vanguard of Latin American musicians transforming the US jazz scene. Blending a verdant continuum of influences from West Africa, Cuba, and American jazz, he’s created a singular sound, one of the most ambitious and consequent cross-cultural visions on the contemporary scene. His sextet features a stellar cast of longtime collaborators, including his younger brother, bassist Yunior Terry, and fellow Cubans Manuel Valera (piano) and Mauricio Herrera (percussion). Oakland-born trumpet star Ambrose Akinmusire and Miami-reared Haitian-American drummer Obed Calvaire, a member of the SFJAZZ Collective, round out the all-star combo. An innovator steeped in tradition, Terry creates original music that vividly embodies a sonic world marked by Afro-Cuban polyrhythms and exquisite post-bop angles.
