The View From Bernal Hill
Thu, June 4, 12:30–1:30pm, Free
An extended family of San Francisco musicians have fleshed out the mysterious and baroque songs of The View From Bernal Hill, but the core of this roiling sonic endeavor is French-Vietnamese composer Camille Mai, Argentine guitarist Nahuel Bronzini, and Seattleite bassist Schuyler Karr. Born out the creative ferment of Occupy SF in 2012, the ensemble has forged an unstable amalgam of odd-meter rock, chamber jazz harmonies, and hip-hop lyricism. As resident artists at the Red Poppy Art House since 2014, TVFBH has become even more deeply enmeshed in the Mission arts scene, where they explore psychological and spiritual extremes, and the hidden fault lines between dread and beauty.

Theatre Rhinoceros
TIMON! – The Musical (3 shows)
Thu, June 5, 7–8pm, Free
Fri, June 6, 7–8pm, Free
Sat, June 7, 1–2pm, Free
Theatre Rhinoceros may be the world’s longest running professional queer theater company, but their satire hasn’t lost a bit of its bite. Timon! – The Musical, An Alfresco Musical Experience transfers Shakespeare’s ancient Athens to contemporary San Francisco, where the cafés are full of bohemians, the City’s falling apart because nobody works, and millionaire arts patron Timon gets hustled by fast-talking artists. It’s a wickedly topical camp musical in the spirit of John Fisher’s TITUS! Come to sing. Come to laugh. Come to apply for funding!

Dafnis Prieto Sextet
Sat, June 13, 1–2:30pm, Free
This is not your grandfather’s Latin jazz. An acclaimed composer and visionary bandleader, Cuban drum maestro Dafnis Prieto is in the vanguard of a brilliant movement of Latin American musicians reshaping the New York jazz scene. The 2011 recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, he’s a conservatory-trained virtuoso who combines vast knowledge of Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms with jazz’s post-bop forms. Prieto’s sextet brims with similarly dazzling talents, and he’s celebrating the release of the band’s eagerly awaited second album Triangles and Circles featuring a superlative cast including saxophonists Peter Apfelbaum and Felipe Lamoglia, trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, pianist Manuel Valera, and bassist Johannes Weidenmueller.

Ka-Hon (2 shows)
Fri, June 12, 11–11:30am & 12:15–12:45pm, Free
What’s in that box, you ask? In the hands of Ka-Hon, a gentle spring shower, a flamenco troupe, a galloping stallion, and a rumba circle. Drawing on a pan-American array of rhythms, the high-energy ensemble displays the astounding versatility of the humble cajón, a simple wooden box usually played by a percussionist seated atop it. Founded in 2012 by some of the Bay Area’s finest Latin percussionists, Ka-Hon features Venezuelan-born Omar Ledezma, Peru’s Braulio Barrera and Pedro Rosales, and Mexican-born José Roberto Hernandez and Javier Cabanillas. Known for highly interactive performances, this band creates an experience that’s definitely outside the box.
