Mumbai-born harmonica ace and vocalist Aki Kumar has taken the blues to places the music has never gone before. With his breakout 2016 album Aki Goes to Bollywood and critically hailed 2018 follow up Hindi Man Blues (both on Little Village Records), he’s honed a delirious sonic mash up of classic Indian film themes and rootsy American grooves. A major force on the South Bay blues scene, where he leads a Tuesday night jam session at San Jose’s Poor House Bistro, he’ll be dipping into his Bollywood book but focusing on his impressive originals. Backed by 24-year-old Russian-born guitarist Rome Yamilov, veteran bassist Vance Ehlers, and Charlie Musselwhite drummer June Core, Kumar embodies the global reach and absorbent power of this African-American art form.
